Did you read along in the previous article? It entails great explanation with an example from the real work life of why values matter and what personal values are. The article is a great pre read before reading this one because it also touches upon how your values can be your lighthouse for future guidance. If you didn’t read along, then you can read it here.

The Significance of Values to Thrive

Life can go up and down, getting you into sidetracks or even off track but finding our way is often guided by our values. These values are the compass that helps us navigate through the ups and downs, making choices and decisions that resonate with our true selves. Therefor we’ll delve into the process of finding your top three values and those values can be seen as your guiding lighthouse in life.

Maybe you prefer to read in Danish? Then read the Danish version here.

But before going into the process you’ll get a small recap on what personal values are. Our values are the foundation of who we are and how we show up in the world. Values shape our beliefs, influence our behaviors, and impact our relationships. When we align our actions with our values, we experience a sense of authenticity and fulfillment. Conversely, when our actions contradict our values, we may feel dissonance and inner turmoil. So, how can we identify these values that are so fundamental to our identity? Here is a step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Time to Reflect on Your Values

Take your time to reflect on these 3 questions. It can be on a long walk or over several days. You don’t want to force it:

  1. Reflect on Past Experiences: Take a trip down memory lane and think about moments in your life when you felt truly content and fulfilled. What were you doing, and what made those moments special? Perhaps you felt most alive when helping others, or maybe it was when you were creating art. These experiences often hold clues to your core values.

  2. Identify Your Non-Negotiables: Consider the principles you would never compromise on, no matter the circumstances. Are there issues or causes that you are passionately committed to? These non-negotiables can point towards values like justice, equality, or compassion.

  3. Examine Role Models: Think about people you admire and look up to. What qualities or traits in them resonate with you? It’s often said that we are drawn to others who share our values. Analyze why you admire these individuals, and you’ll uncover more of your own values.

Step 2: Visualization Exercise

After reflecting on the above questions, you should try this visualization exercise – finding your value light house.

Give yourself 15–20 minutes for this exercise. You can do it seated or reclining, but it helps if you keep your eyes closed. You can access a free sound recording at josefinecampbell.com/lighthouse. The exercise is a visualization that helps you to find your top values by giving a little more extreme perspective of events in your life.

Step 3: Find your Top Values to Navigate From

After you’ve listened to the audio file and imagined your farewell speeches, keeping as true to life as possible, you can then analyze their intrinsic message. If the speakers say something that gives you a definite sinking feeling in your stomach, it may be important. It can inspire you to choose your values. For some people, it may take a long time to choose these values.

Below, you’ll find a list of values that you can use for inspiration if you would like to continue with the exercise. In principle, most values are worthy of having, so often the hardest part is not including your most important values but eliminating the less important ones to narrow it down to the top three.

What are your top three values? If you were to choose one as the most important, which one would it be? Use the list of words below for inspiration or choose values that are not related to the ideas in this list.
